Classic Green Bean Casserole

This crowd-pleaser has been around for over 60 years.

The home economics department of the Campbell soup company invented the simple dish in 1955.

Led by Dorcas Reilly, the team’s goal was to invent a quick recipe using two common ingredients: Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup and green beans.

The popularity of the recipe immediately skyrocketed, and it’s graced holiday tables ever since!

It’s the perfect Thanksgiving side dish for turkey, ham, and other traditional foods. But it’s just as yummy for Sunday dinner with chicken or pork.

Ingredients

As promised, you only need six ingredients to make this time-honored Thanksgiving recipe.

  • Campbell’s® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup –The staple of the dish. For a lighter version, use Campbell’s® condensed 98% fat-free cream of mushroom soup.
  • Cooked, cut green beans – You can use fresh, canned, or frozen green beans. Boil them for about 5 minutes (for frozen) and 8 minutes (for fresh) or until they’re tender and crisp.
  • Milk – It makes this casserole even creamier. Aside from milk, you can also add cheddar cheese for that extra flavor!
  • French’s® French Fried Onions – This is such a crucial ingredient to the dish. So much so, people often call it “French’s green bean casserole.”
  • Soy sauce and ground black pepper For that salty and spicy flavor.

How to Make Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole

This Thanksgiving side dish only takes around 10 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to cook.

And because it stores nicely in the fridge, you can either make it on the day of your party or ahead of time!

1. Combine the ingredients. In a 3-qt. casserole dish, mix the green beans, soy sauce, milk, pepper, and onions.

2. Pop it in the oven. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Top it. Garnish it with crispy onions and cook for another 5 minutes or until the onions are golden and crispy.

4. Serve warm. Season with black pepper and parsley (optional) and serve!

How To Make Ahead

Hosting a holiday feast can be quite overwhelming, so you’ll need all the help you can get.

That’s why this recipe is excellent for parties. For make-ahead green bean casserole, here’s what to do:

  1. Mix the filling, then chill. Cover the casserole dish and pop it, unbaked, in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  2. Bake and serve. When your guests are about to arrive, pop it in the oven.

What to Serve with Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole is a versatile holiday side, and you can pair it with anything!

Here are some of my go-to serving suggestions.

  • Thanksgiving or Christmas Turkey – You can’t go wrong with this classic pairing.
  • Mashed Potatoes – Mashed potatoes and green beans are staples at any holiday dinner.
  • Sweet Potato Casserole – Another delicious side dish to round out the feast.
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts – For a veggie-heavy celebration, add some Brussels sprouts!
  • Glazed Ham – Green bean casserole goes just as well with ham as it does with turkey.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Throw in a festive twist. Add half a cup of chopped red pepper to the casserole. The combination of red and green adds festive color to the dish!
  • Get cheesy. Skip the soy sauce and add half a cup of cheddar cheese instead. Gouda, feta, goat, and bleu cheese are also fantastic options.
  • Go gluten-free. Use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs to make homemade crispy onions.
  • Make it vegan. Use plain plant-based milk (such as almond) instead of regular milk.
  • Spice it up. If you want an extra-spicy green bean casserole, top it with some diced jalapenos. You can also add red pepper flakes or Cajun seasoning for an extra kick.
  • Bacon, bacon, bacon! Bacon tastes great with everything, and green bean casserole is no exception. Fry up some bacon bits and use them to top the dish.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

It’s unlikely you’ll have leftover green bean casserole, as it’s the star of all the Thanksgiving recipes. If you do, here’s how to keep it fresh:

To Store: Refrigerate leftovers in an air-tight container for 3 days.

To Freeze: Remove the onions. Then, wrap and freeze the casserole for up to 3 months.

To Reheat: Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil, then pop it in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ingredients

  • 2 (10.75 ounce) cans Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 8 cups cooked cut green beans

  • 2 2/3 cups French’s French Fried Onions

Instructions

  • Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, pepper, beans, and 1 1/3 cups of fried onions in a 3-quart casserole dish.
  • Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes or until hot.
  • Stir well., top with the remaining onions, and bake for more 5 minutes or until the onions are golden.
